description:
Measurement of the static contact angle.
Application:
Evaluation of effectiveness of conservation treatments; Evaluation of water-
repellency of products used as protective treatments on stone surfaces.
Basics:
The contact angle is a thermodynamic property which is described by the angle  
formed at the interface liquid-vapour with an another interface liquid-solid. It  
minimizes the free surface energy of the system and it is described by Young law;  
it corresponds at balancing of horizontal forces acting on a droplet having  
negligible volume and laid on an ideal surface. When the angle between the  
surface and the droplet is greater than 90 degree the surface is hydrophobic; when  
the angle between the surface and the droplet is smaller than 90 degree the  
surface is hydrophilic.
