CHRONOLOGY: end of the XV – beginning of the XVI century

PATRONAGE: Francesco Carmagne, vice-bailiff from 1496 and bailiff of Aosta in the years 1498-1502.
SUBJECT: St. Francis of Assisi, founder of Order of Friars Minor, Patron Saint of Italy. Born and died at Assisi (c. 1181-1226), canonized by Pope Gregory IX in 1228. Feast 4 October. Represented as a tonsured Franciscan friar, middle-aged, with stigmata, holding a crucifix, wearing sandals, rays imprinted on his halo. The background is covered with a striped cloth. Tiled floor. The coat of arms of the donor’s family stands out in the centre of the first panel.
CRITICAL NOTES: the composition shows originality. The painting, at present in a disappointing state of preservation, is difficult to judge.
CONDITIONS: in bad state of preservation. The third panel has been reinstalled facing out. Various repaintings, lost tesseras, stop-gaps, surface corrosion.
