|FILE : Milano Duomo 9|
|TITLE : A Fleet of Galeons (a)|
LOCATION: Milano, Cathedral, window nXIX, panel 11a
DIMENSIONS : 120 x 60 cms.
PROVENANCE : Milano Cathedral, sXIII window
CHRONOLOGY : post 1572-73
AUTHOR : Flemish glazier (attribution)
SUBJECT(S): A fleet of galeons during the battle of Lepanto
CRITICAL NOTES: E.Brivio, was the first to recognize that this panel and the others below are the only still extant panels, ( See the files: Duomo nos. 10-11-12-13-14-15- and Museum 1), of a stained glass window representing The Pilgrims' Procession to a Shrine of the Virgin. Using diagrams and the 8 extant panels of this window, Brivio was able to partially reconstruct its original order. In 1891 this window was still positioned in the window sXIII. It was probably painted to commemorate the miracolous intervention of the Virgin in the Lepanto battle victory ( oct. 1571) ( E.Brivio ).
CONDITION: in good condition, although several heavy mending leads.
PATRONAGE: Pope Pius V or his successor Pope Gregory XIII (E.Brivio)
